EJI Calendar 5/4

1992. Riots in Los Angeles, California, sparked by acquital of white police officers who beat black motorist Rodney King, end, leaving 53 people dead, 2000 injured and $1 billion in damage.

Equal Justice Initiative Calendar 5/4.

The King riots and the days leading up to them were complicated. By posting this calendar item I am not endorsing the actions of the rioters.

The police acquittal did follow a pattern that continues to this day. Mainstream White society is reluctant to hold police to account for their actions. Police have the power to take our lives or liberty and yet they are nearly always provided the benefit of the doubt. No other municipal agency I’m aware of is treated as being justified 99.9% of the time. Why this is, is something worth reflecting on. Why should the people with the greatest power over our lives always be given deference?
