DBAA: Alaska Newspapers (Fairbanks and Juneau) Index

Our next stop on the Alaska page of the State Agency Databases Across the Fifty States Project is:

Alaska Newspapers Index – Indexing for a number of Fairbanks Newspapers from 1900-1975 and for the Juneau Empire for 1992-1999. Searchable by headline and year for all newspapers. Juneau Empire may also be searched by reporter or abstract.

To get a sense of what’s available, try a search on Vietnam or Earthquake.

All of the records in this database are citation only. If you’re intrigued by a title, you should be able to access the microfilmed papers directly if you live in Anchorage, Fairbanks or Juneau. If you live outside of these communities, you can probably get a specific article through interlibrary loan.

If you appreciate this database, you have a federal employee to thank. Although the actual database was created by staff from the State Library and the IT staff of the Department of Education and Early Development, the underlying and EXTENSIVE dataset was compiled by a Bureau of Land Management employee. From the website,

Mr. Mike Brown of the Bureau of Land Management, Alaska State Office, Anchorage, compiled all of the underlying indexing for all of the Fairbanks, Tanana and Yukon newspapers in this database. This database would not have been possible without his work and we are extremely grateful for his efforts.

Next week we will examine a resource that gives quick information about Alaska’s schools.
