1M1WNot: Gideon – Polygamistic Hero

Gideon is a hero from the Book of Judges, who with 300 men and the help of God defeated the Midianites who had been harassing the people of Israel. Judges 8:29-31 describes his family arrangements:

Then Jerubbaal (Gideon), son of Joash, went back home to stay. Now Gideon had seventy sons, his direct descendants, for he had many wives. His concubine who lived in Shechem also bore him a son, whom he named Abimelech.

Look through the whole story of Gideon and you won’t find a condemnation of him for his multiple wives or even his concubine. The author of Judges DOES condemn Gideon for an idol he constructed out of gold seized from the Midianites. It seems logical to me that since the author of Judges was willing to condemn Gideon for idolatry, he would have denounced him for polygamy if marriage really had been “One Man, One Woman” from the “beginning of time.” But it wasn’t.
