Constitution Monday: Guns

The first ten amendments to the US Constitution are known as the Bill of Rights.

Here is the Second Amendment:

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

I will venture to guess that out of all 27 amendments to our Constitution, this is by far the most well known.

It’s been said by some that the right to guns is the right that guarantees all others. While I support the regulated private ownership of guns, I don’t hold to this view. It seems like there are plenty of societies such as Iraq, Afganistan and Sudan where private gun ownership is widespread, but few human rights are in evidence. A gun is a tool and it can be used to uphold rights or deny them.
