Constitution Monday: Why States Accept Each Other’s Documents

Note: Throughout this series, items that are hyperlinked were in the Constitution as written in 1787 but have since been amended or superseded.

Article IV of the Constitution of the United States deals with relations between the States and regulates the creation of new states.  Here is Article IV, Section I:

Section. 1.

Full Faith and Credit shall be given in each State to the public Acts, Records, and judicial Proceedings of every other State. And the Congress may by general Laws prescribe the Manner in which such Acts, Records and Proceedings shall be proved, and the Effect thereof.

This is the section of the Constitution that  ensures that documents such as birth certificates are recognized in every State of the Union.
