National Review Covers Jan-Jun 2008

Since January 1, 2008, National Review, the flagship publication of America’s conservative movement has had 12 issues. Six of these covers have related to Democrat Barack Obama. But none of the covers featured presumptive Republican nominee John McCain. Has National Review forgotten the lesson learned by Democrats in 2004? That it’s not enough to be against something, you have to be for something?
Doesn’t their own party’s nominee rate a cover story?

John McCain, in case you haven’t noticed, is not now and never was a conservative. He is a Republican, but NR is conservative, last I looked.
You may not think he is a conservative, but a number of conservative organizations do. Here are some of his ratings from Project Vote Smart:
2006 Senator McCain supported the interests of the National Taxpayers Union 88 percent in 2006.
1999 Senator McCain supported the interests of the National Taxpayers Union 87 percent in 1999.
2007 Senator McCain supported the interests of the American Conservative Union 80 percent in 2007.
2006 Senator McCain supported the interests of the National Journal – Composite Conservative Score 56.7 percent in 2006.
2004 Senator McCain supported the interests of the Eagle Forum 100 percent in 2004. – To be fair, they’ve rated him lower in 2007. But it shows he was conservative while not campaigning for President.
Take a look at Obama’s ratings for the same group and they’re not even close. He’s the best NR can do this year and they’re still shunning him.
Let’s take a look at McCain’s ratings from liberal groups. Maybe that would show your case better:
2007 Senator McCain supported the interests of the Americans for Democratic Action 10 percent in 2007.
1998 Senator McCain supported the interests of the Americans for Democratic Action 20 percent in 1998.
Or maybe not. Trust me. McCain is no liberal. He is poles apart on nearly every issue from both Obama and Clinton.
