As of November 16, 2007, I have lived nine years in Alaska. That’s given me a fair amount of time to study my adopted home state, but I keep learning new things about its history. Today I learned that my monastic hero Thomas Merton visited my home town of Juneau in 1968 on his way to his ill-fated trip to Asia. The story of that trip, plus some conferences in Alaska are told in the book, Thomas Merton in Alaska: The Alaskan Conferences, Journals and Letters. I checked out the book today and may report back later.
