You might have heard about the American Security Project’s efforts to measure progress in the US’s “War on Terror.” While as of this writing I’ve seen stories talk about how we’re failing in a number of metrics, I hadn’t seen coverage of the metrics themselves. So I went to the actual report:
Are We Winning?: Measuring [...]

Today I am grateful for:
1) It is beautiful and clear this morning. And I have the day off! There’s frost on the ground, but that’s ok.2) I got together with some friends and watched Firefly’s “Bushwhacked” episode last night and we had lots of fun making comments and sharing insights. Even picked up on a [...]

As of November 16, 2007, I have lived nine years in Alaska. That’s given me a fair amount of time to study my adopted home state, but I keep learning new things about its history. Today I learned that my monastic hero Thomas Merton visited my home town of Juneau in 1968 on his way [...]

The 1936 movie below does a good job of putting Alaska into context and explaining Alaska’s different regions. I was very surprised by the footage of my home town of Juneau, that starts about 5 minutes into the movie. The view today looks very similar to what it looked like in 1936. One difference is [...]

I’ve seen a number of people try to blog three things they are grateful for each day, so I thought I’d give it a try here:
———————Day after Thanksgiving brought a number of things to be grateful for, even though I had zero desire to leave bed this morning.
1) A good evening of conversation, food and [...]

You know that Hugo Weaving has to be a great actor when he can carry off wearing a mask for an entire movie in V for Vendetta. He expressed a wide range emotions through his voice and his non-verbal body cues. I found the movie to be very good and unpredictable. Naturally the movie was [...]

A Dog’s Breakfast is an effort of David Hewlett and other Stargate actors that has shades of Sweeny Todd. It makes you laugh very hard at things that should be unlaughable and defies prediction. The entire movie is filmed in one house and its surrounding fields, but it never feels claustrophobic. Chris Judge’s cameo is [...]
