Open Tabs: More Accountability Reports

Here are the last two of my backlogged General Accountability Office reports that I thought were worth sharing with my six Bloglines subscribers (and anyone else stopping by):

GAO-07-16, Commercial Space Launches: FAA Needs Continued Planning and Monitoring to Oversee the Safety of the Emerging Space Tourism Industry, October 20, 2006 – Looks like there will be greater federal oversight of space tourism. I hope this doesn’t smother this promising new industry.

GAO-07-148R, Prevalence of Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, Dating Violence, and Stalking, November 13, 2006 – It turns out we don’t know how much DV is really taking place in this country, although it may well be underreported. As the report itself says (Emphasis mine):

Since 2001, the amount of national research that has been conducted on the prevalence of domestic violence and sexual assault has been limited, and even less research has been conducted on dating violence and stalking. No single, comprehensive effort currently exists that provides nationwide statistics on the prevalence of these four categories of crime among men, women, youth, and children. Rather, various national efforts address certain subsets of these crime categories among some segments of the population. Some of these national data collection efforts focus largely on incidence–the number of separate times a crime is committed against individuals during a specific time period–rather than prevalence–the unique number of individuals who were victimized during a specific time period.

In the next few days, look for more of these “open tabs” posts, though some of them will be more library-oriented.
