Who benefited from your work today? is one of five questions asked by Tom Terez, a workplace consultant I actually like. He tends to speak in plain language rather than management buzzwords and you should both check out his web site and go to any workshop he gives in your area. He did a training in Juneau several years back that I found very helpful.
So, who benefited from your work today? I think we librarians should be able to answer this question more than most. If we can think about how our work helps others, I think we will be happier and better librarians for it. If you’re stuck for an answer, try the Feel Good Librarian.
Sadly, not everything Tom Terez is helpful. In answer to his first question, I’d take all my coworkers to a really big breakfast, tell them how much I’ve enjoyed working with them and go home to my wife. I’d spend a few hours telling her how wonderful she was, go over our finances and contacts one last time and then call as many relatives and friends as possible. Under no circumstances would I knowingly spend my last day on earth at the office. Sorry Tom, that question just doesn’t have any traction for me. But four out of five isn’t bad!
