The theme of this week’s AK is health.
The sixth segment of the program (about a half hour in?) is “Baines Profile: Unalaska’s Charles Homans’ portrait of Dr. David Baines. (5:46)” Dr. Baines is an Alaska Native physician originally from Southeast Alaska. When he first entered medicine, he was only the third Native American physician in all of Alaska. He brings a mixture of western medicine, Christian faith and Tsimshian and Tlingit traditions to his work. It’s an interesting profile of someone who seems to have managed to acquire a rich heritage from the two worlds he walks through.
And if that isn’t enough to interest you, Dr. Baines also has some hair-raising medivac stories that should!
