Future of media lives in Talkeetna

One of the great things about the Internet is the explosion of independent media and the loosening grip of Big Media on music. Whole Wheat Radio, a Talkeetna, Alaska based web radio station has been leading the way for the past five years.

What do they play? I’ll let them answer:

We focus on independent musicians in the following genres: acoustic, folk, jazz, classical, bluegrass, singer-songwriter, swing, big-band, new-age, instrumental, blues, black-gospel, Alaskana, spoken word, and humor. We rarely air Christian, hip-hop, punk, techo, experimental-electronica, and hard rock.

If you’re still at loss in picturing their sound, check out the most recent 25 songs they played.

If you’re an indie/folk/alternative fiend like me, give Whole Wheat Radio a listen. I think you’ll find it filling and nourishing.

And this is just the type of operation that could be threatened if opponents of net neutrality get their way. Don’t let that happen. Read up and take action.

  1. Thanks Daniel! The issue of net neutrality has definitely caught my attention. I have no idea where it will end up but, while we still have an unfettered opportunity, it sure is exciting to be a part of the grassroots media explosion – especially from a backwater like Talkeetna. Thanks for noticing!

  2. Thanks for stopping by Jim. What you’re doing is what my dream is for a lot of rural areas — harnessing the power of the Internet to do new and different things. Aside from putting out great music, more connectivity in rural areas across the country could lead towards more telecommuting, more distance education and more opportunities for people to stay in low population states like Alaska and the Dakotas instead of moving to big cities.

Keep up the great work and give a big hello to the rest of the WWR DJ’s!
